About five minutes before sunrise the sun, still below the horizon
is pinking the sky for another perfect day in paradise; Sussex
County Delaware, north of Milton at Reynolds Pond!
These three swans are about to join hundreds of other swans as the
morning gets a little lighter, still before sunrise.
I caught hundreds of Swans landing before dawn at Reynolds Pond near
Milton Delaware. Here two of them, full from a predawn
breakfast of baby bean shoots in a field a mile away, under the
Valley system below in fact, now comes to Reynolds for some fishy
brunch before the sun comes up.
The morning is bright but the fog has rolled in a few minutes after
sunrise at Reynolds Pond. These swan come for the fish.
Irrigation, such as this self propelled Valley Irrigation system are
very expensive but it can multiply the productivity of land and
what's more, in a time of drought when most of the crop is dried up,
causing a severe shortage in supply; well irrigated crops bring in
high dollars per ton and many tons per acre; a double blessing, but
at very high cost in equipment and fuel. This one near Milton and
south of Milford stands vigil before dawn.
The Valley System is a "Smart System" that "knows" where the end of
the field is. This one has come to the end of the field as it
walks it's self-propelled way around the field in a circle from the
central pivot and here you can see where it "breaks" to allow the
long line of sprinklers to continue to circle without swinging too
close to the road.
Wells Cows numbers 2 and 3 are part of the Wells
family's healthy and valuable herd that graze north of Lewes and
south of Milton along the edge of the Prime Hook Refuge.
