Lewes, DE –
Lighthouse Foundation
Wins With First-Ever Radio Fund raiser;
But Says Insurance
Will be a Continuing Issue Insuring a lighthouse, it turns out, is
not as easy as insuring your car, or even your own house, no matter
how palatial the house.

Walt Palmer, a Lewes
businessman and former member of the Board of Directors of the
Foundation, came up with a ground-breaking plan. Conduct a local
radio telethon for the lighthouses. Everyone knows about telethons
to raise money for Public Radio, for muscular dystrophy and for
other diseases. But for lighthouses? It hadn’t been done. Now it
has been done, and it was a huge success.
“I had high
expectations for this fundraising project, but the results were
better than I thought possible,” said Red Moulinier, Foundation
treasurer. The telethon swelled the treasury by more than $12,000.
“I was thrilled,” Moulinier added; “it’s given the Foundation some
breathing room.”

Jody Hudson (left) and
Dan Gaffney auction off an Abraxas limited edition print of Harbor
of Refuge Light to the highest contributor during a morning segment
of the WGMD radio telethon. The print brought a $500 donation.
Signed, numbered
prints of works of local artist Abraxas were especially hot items.
A dozen of the Abraxas prints were donated by the artist’s father
Jody Hudson, an area real estate developer.
Hudson
spent most of the day in the WGMD studio describing the prints over
the air while newscaster Mari Lou (doesn’t use a last name) posted
photos to the WGMD website.
